How designs are applied

MethodUsed forWhat it means for you
DTG (direct to garment)T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and other apparelWater-based ink printed straight into the fibres and heat-set. The softest finish, with photo-level detail and no film on top of the fabric.
DTF (direct to film)T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and other apparelThe design is printed on film, then heat-pressed onto the fabric. Brighter, more solid colour that holds up well on blends and dark fabrics.
EmbroideryHats and some apparelThe design is stitched in thread. A raised, textured finish that cannot crack or peel.

Apparel listings that can be made with more than one method let you choose under “Print method”. Mugs, tumblers, stickers and other hard goods are printed with methods suited to each material.

T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and other apparel

  • Turn the garment inside out before washing.
  • Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, with similar colours.
  • Use a mild detergent. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
  • Tumble dry on low heat, or hang to dry. High heat can shrink cotton and age the print faster.
  • Do not iron directly on the design. If needed, iron inside out on a low setting.
  • Do not dry clean.

A new DTG print can feel slightly stiff and may fade a little after the first wash as excess ink is washed out — this is normal. A print that cracks, peels or washes off when cared for as above is a defect: report it within 30 days of delivery under our Refund Policy.

Embroidered items and hats

  • Spot clean hats with a damp cloth and a little mild soap; do not machine wash or tumble dry them, as this can bend the brim and crown.
  • Let hats air dry on a rounded shape, such as a towel rolled into a ball.
  • For embroidered apparel, wash inside out in cold water and do not iron over the stitching.

Mugs, travel mugs and tumblers

  • Hand wash with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners, which can scratch the print.
  • Use the dishwasher or microwave only if the product page says the item is dishwasher or microwave safe.
  • Never put stainless steel tumblers or travel mugs in the microwave.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as pouring boiling water into a mug straight from the freezer.

Tote bags and belt bags

Spot clean with a damp cloth, or hand wash in cold water if the label allows. Hang to dry away from direct heat, and do not iron over the design.

Socks

Wash inside out in cold water with similar colours, and tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Do not use bleach.

Pillows, tapestries and posters

  • Pillow covers: if the cover is removable, take out the insert and wash the cover inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle; hang to dry. Spot clean the insert.
  • Tapestries: hand wash or machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, and hang to dry. Iron on the back on a low setting if needed.
  • Posters: keep away from damp and long periods of direct sunlight, which can fade colours. A frame with glass protects them best.

Stickers and magnets

  • Apply stickers to a clean, dry, smooth surface at room temperature, and press firmly from the centre outwards to remove air bubbles.
  • Clean stickers and magnets with a damp cloth; do not soak them or scrub the printed surface.
  • Keep magnets away from credit cards, phones and other devices that can be affected by magnets.

Phone cases

Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid alcohol, solvents and abrasive cleaners, which can wear the printed surface.

Colour and print variation

Because every item is printed to order, colours can look slightly different from your screen, and the exact position of the design can vary slightly from item to item. These differences are normal and are described in our Terms of Service.
